Strap end 11

Anglo Saxon Strap End

Copper alloy - blue-green patina

3.5 cm x 1 cm

Thomas Class 1 Type A

Proximal has two iron rivets - one broken in antiquity and head remaining other rivet in place

A third larger iron rivet has been driven though the strap end three quarters of the way down - it is doubtful it is to replace the broken rivet in the method of attaching the strap end to the strap

A three lobe palmette

The body is of Trewhiddle type a central panel surrounded by a frame and further surrounded by a box design border

The design is of a beast and originally picked out in niello now much degraded

The terminal is zoomorphic square shaped ears a V shape with an arc as a forehead semi-circular groves surround the eyes and a triangular shape nose - the whole zoomorphic terminal is dominated by a large iron rivet which does not seem to have been part of the original design

The underneath is plain but does have a patch of niello or silver
